Mental Health Education for Adults and Parents

Who I am

Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Lindsey Hutchings, RN, Psychotherapist, registered in Ontario and writer of this mental health blog. I run a private practice (LAH Counselling & Psychotherapy) that delivers individual online psychotherapy in Ontario. I also love to teach. In this blog, I take topics commonly covered in my practice and share the knowledge with anyone receptive to it.
As a Registered Nurse in Ontario, I can only deliver individual care to those residing in my registered domain. But by providing education, anyone around the world with access and interest can benefit from the information.
What This Mental Health Blog Is About
This mental health blogs intends to be a place to help adults (especially parents) to understand themselves better, respond more intentionally, and build skills to navigate life’s challenges.
Why, especially parents? Good question. Allow me to explain. Whether or not we want to admit it, parenting styles have lasting impacts on their child’s functioning into adulthood. Children will undoubtedly face hardship in their lives, and the goal of good parenting isn’t to shield them from all harm. The goal of good parenting is to create a strong foundation so their children can learn the skills they need to go out, look hardship in the face, and conquer it.
The problem is this thing called intergenerational trauma, which is where wounded parents are unable to fully meet the needs of their children, leading to wounded children.
I am focusing on helping parents heal because if we can heal the parents, we can heal the homes and create a generation of prosperous, resilient children.

Who This Mental Health Blog Is For
This blog is for adults who want to understand themselves better, respond to challenges more thoughtfully, and strengthen their relationships with others.
It’s also for parents—especially those who sometimes feel triggered by the very kids they love. Here, you’ll find education about why we react the way we do, how to manage impulses, and how to build skills that support calmer, healthier interactions at home and beyond.

The name Mindful Growth reflects my mission: supporting you to grow with awareness and intention. Growth doesn’t happen by accident—it happens when you slow down, notice what’s happening inside you, and take small, deliberate steps toward change.
Through this blog, I aim to give you practical, understandable information about mental health, relationships, and personal growth. Over time, these posts will also help inform workshops and programs from LAH Wellness, designed to teach these skills more deeply.

Core Topics You’ll Explore Here
To guide your journey, I focus on 8 foundational areas—four “skills” and four “understanding” pillars:
Skills
- Emotion Regulation: Tools to notice, manage, and respond to your emotions rather than reacting impulsively.
- Assertive Communication: How to express your needs clearly while respecting others.
- Conflict Resolution: Practical strategies for navigating disagreements with calm and clarity.
- Strengthening Your Sense of Self: Building self-worth, boundaries, and resilience.
Understanding
- Nervous System: Why we react the way we do under stress and how to work with your body’s responses.
- Adverse Events: How past experiences shape thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
- Parenting: Strategies for navigating triggers and fostering calm, nurturing family environments.
- Human Needs: Understanding what drives behaviours and how to meet your needs effectively.
Each of these topics will be covered in deep-dive cornerstone posts, with additional shorter posts and exercises that show how to apply them in daily life.

A Simple Place to Start
Even before diving into all the topics above, you can begin practicing one small step today: notice a moment when your nervous system feels activated—your heart racing, tension in your shoulders, or a quick urge to react. Pause, name the feeling, and take a slow breath.
Small moments like this are the foundation of intentional growth. Over time, they add up to big changes in how you respond to stress, relationships, and parenting challenges.
